Why a local govenment web site index?
The web is a huge information source, much of which has a commercial basis.
These commercial sites are well aware of the importance of high search engine visibility.
They therefore spend large amounts of time and money to ensure their sites become highly placed in search result lists.
In general, most non-commercial sites are not so focused and place little emphasis on listing their sites with search engines and directories.
Of the non-commercial information sources, there are a large number that are specifically geared towards the local community.
These are the official (and unofficial) council web sites.
The Oultwood LG Index was set-up to overcome the problem of finding the appropriate local community information source.
The aims of the index
The aims of this non-profit making venture are:
- identify all community based web sites for the areas covered by the index.
- make site navigation as easy as possible.
- become the definative index for the countries it covers.
- demonstrate how an effective site can be created at minimal cost by a single individual in his spare time.
- demonstrate good practice in web page design, size and implementation.
- all links that become unavailable are flagged as such and any that remain unavailable over a two month period are removed.
How can you help?
You can help me achieve my aims by:
- publicize the Oultwood LG Index.
- mentioning Oultwood whenever you contact a council you have found via this index.
- notifying me of any council web sites that are not included within the index.
- notifying me of any links in the index that do not work.
- letting me know what you like and dislike about the Oultwood site.
- making Oultwood one of your favourites.
